Artist Profile: Norman Rockwell

Norman Rockwell was born on February 3, 1894 to Jarvis Waring Rockwell and Nancy Hill. His father was a manager of a textile firm. His mother didn't have a job other than being a mother to Norman and his brother Jarvis.
He started art school at a young age. He went to National Academy Museum and School and Art Students of New York. He started his art career at age 17.
He was married three different times.
He had some major world or historical events happen during his lifetime. Like World War I and World War II. The Great Depression. The Civil Rights movement was started. And the first man walked on the moon. He didn't really seem to have any main struggles or challenges in his career or life.
His main artistic medium was painting. He is well known for his paintings that were the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. He wasn't really part of any artistic movement.
Some of his most famous works include the Four Freedoms, Going and Coming, and The Problem We All Live With.
He continued his art and painting until he later died on November 8, 1978, in his hometown of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. He was 84 years old.

A couple of my favorite pieces by him are as follows.
The first is Charwomen in Theatre.
And I'm not for sure on the title of the last one but I think it is Bodybuilder.

  1. Such an American icon...with such a distinct, recognizable style. I think most people know and have an affection for his work.
